Gir National Park
Gir Forest is the only place in the world, apart from Africa, where the lion can be seen in its natural habitat. It is here that one of the earliest efforts at conservation began. In 1900 the Nawab of Junagarh, in whose territory most of the Gir Forest lay, had invited Lord Curzon, viceroy at that time, for a lion shikar. When the viceroy accepted, a newspaper published an anonymous letter which questioned the propriety of an important person doing further damage to an endangered species. Lord Curzon not only cancelled

his shikar but also advised the nawab to protect the remaining lions, which the nawab dutifully did. Now the Gir Forest is one of the most important game preserves in India.
The Gir lion is a majestic animal with a bigger tail tassel, bushier elbow tufts and a smaller mane than its African cousin. Earlier in the 20th century there were only a hundred lions left in the Gir; the 1979 census enumerated 205. The forest is one of the few remaining places where a visitor can drive through open scrub country, dry tropical thorn forests and an evergreen corridor along the riverside. The forest harbors a variety of smaller animals and birds. There is also a newly developed crocodile farm. Other predators in the Gir are panthers and striped hyena.

Besides the Wild Ass, the sanctuary is home to a host of other animals and nearly 350 different species of birds, including the common crane, pelican and the lesser flamingo. Apart from this, one can also get a rare insight into the lifestyles of the numerous ethnic groups and local tribes, which live in and around the Rann.
