Agra is well known to the tourists for Taj Mahal – one of the Seven Wonders of the World. However, presently Agra has also come up with another attraction – a bear sanctuary. It is the best and the most successful rescue center for bears in the world. People generally go for a tour of Taj Mahal and the nearby areas. Go for a tour of Taj Mahal with Bear Sanctuary which will help you to cover the latest attraction of Agra.
Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan, one of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty. This is a mausoleum which he built in the memory of his loving wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is one of the best examples of Mughal architecture found in India. You will clearly find the influence of Persian architecture. UNESCO declared Taj Mahal a world heritage site in the year 1983. Historians have said that it is "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."
The four pillars, the dome and the white marbles are the main attraction of Taj Mahal. According to the local people, this monument looks grand on a full-moon night when the image of Taj Mahal reflects in the river Yamuna. So make a plan to visit Taj Mahal on a full-moon night and get the real feel.
The Agra Bear Rescue Facility is also known as ABRF and has come into existence with collaboration between the Wildlife SOS and Uttar Pradesh Forest Department. They were the first to give shelter to the rescued dancing bears in India. This was on the Christmas Eve 2002 that this project came into existence. With this collaborative project, age old practice of bear dance has come to an end to certain extent.
The Rescue Centre is situated very close to the Keitham Lake on the Agra-Delhi highway. This has now become a popular tourist attraction in Agra. In the recent times, the state government has come up with plans to develop the Keitham Lake (Soor Sarovar) into a tourist resort. Presently, it is a popular bird sanctuary.
According to Vasudha Mehta, an official of the Rescue Centre, the whole project was developed by Wildlife SOS (WSOS) which is an Indian NGO. They had done two-year investigative survey and research on the dancing bears in India.
On the eve of Christmas in the year 2007, the campaign of saving the dancing bear reached a milestone as the government brought an end to the cruel practice of dancing bears. According to the records, there are around 350-400 dancing bears in India who will be rescued by the Wildlife SOS within 2010 which will finally end the practice of dancing bears permanently.
